Scary snatch theft incident
Mon, January 31, 2022, 4:09 PM
I would like to share my experience as a victim of snatch theft. A week before this incident, my handbag was snatched but I could not chase the thieves. Like the case in Seri Kembangan, where the victim’s bag was snatched while he was having a drink in a restaurant, mine was taken while I was having breakfast at 7 am in Section 7, Shah Alam. The point here is that snatch thieves can strike at any time and they are almost always young men on motorbikes. I felt a shadow on my left and when I turned, my handbag was “whooshed” away. I saw a teenager clutching it, hopping onto a waiting motorcycle a few feet away, and both vanished in the blink of an eye. I lost a phone, thumb drive, house keys, and other personal items but I was fortunate because I had left my little pouch containing my IC, credit cards, driving license, and other cards in the car. I was lucky, too, that I didn’t put the car key in the handbag. The incident has given me a new perspective on petty thieves. They are very frightening!
Women are more likely to be victims of snatch theft because they carry handbags. Women’s custom of carrying handbags is a learned behavior. So can we undo this behavior? Bring up our girls to be simple and train them not to carry too many things when they go out. Millions of women carry handbags. This means snatch thieves have millions of chances to strike. If we stop carrying handbags, snatch theft might just become a thing of the past.
