1. The midbrain, also known as the mesencephalon, is placed between the diencephalon and the pons varolii.
2. Corpora quadrigemina are four rounded elevations on the dorsal surface of the midbrain.
3. Two superior colliculi are responsible for optical reflexes, while two lower colliculi are responsible for hearing reflexes.
4. On the inferior side of the midbrain, there are two thick, fibrous pathways known as cerebral peduncles or crura cerebri.
5. RAS is made up of ascending and descending nerve fibre lines that connect the cerebrum to the midbrain.
6. A mass of grey matter is dispersed within the white matter at the centre of the midbrain. It's known as the red nucleus.
7. The red nucleus is crucial in managing posture and muscle tone.
