Veterinary Science in Ancient India.

A tradition of veterinary therapy developed very early in India. Based on the Ayurveda, Indian veterinary medicine is known for its specialized literature, which gives information on ancient methods of preventing and treating diseases of animals. The oldest existing veterinary text from India is a treatise entitled 'Asvayurveda Siddhanta' by Shalihotra. Subsequently, there is a treatise by Nakula titled 'Asva cikitsita'. Sushruta wrote on animal surgery, making people aware of surgical methods, dressing of wounds, bandaging of fractures, etc. Emperor Ashoka too contributed a lot to the practice of veterinary science.
