Velunachiyar was born in 1730 she was the only daughter of Raja Sellamuthu Sethupathy of Ramanathapuram. She was trained in martial arts like Valari, stick fighting, and wield weapons. She was an expert in horse riding and archery and had proficiency in English, French, and Urdu.
