The Election Commissioner is an important office in the Government of India.
- He is appointed by the President and is responsible for the smooth conduct of the election process. The Election Commissioner are mostly retired IAS officers appointed on an extended term.
- At first there was just one Election Commissioner, later in 1989 the Commission was enlarged with a Chief Election Commissioner and two Election commissioners.
- Sukumar Sen was the first Chief Election Commissioner of India and Sunil Arora, is the current Chief Election Commissioner.
- The term of the Election Commissioner is for 6 years, draws salary at par with those of the Judges the Supreme Court of India.
- The Commissioner can only be removed from office with two-thirds majority in Loksabha and Rajsabha on the grounds of misconduct or incapacity.

- Article 324 of the Indian Constitution established the Election Commission which is an autonomous body.
- In India, Election Commission is central to the process of elections. It consists of the Chief Election Commissioner and two other commissioners. They are appointed by the President.
- As it is important to preserve and maintain the independence of the Election Commission, the Election Commissioner cannot be removed easily from his post on account of any political reasons.
- Sukumar Sen was the first Chief Election Commissioner after independence. Even in adverse conditions, he efficiently handled the responsibility of the Election Commission.
