'Role of Public and Police in curbing the crime against Women'
By Karuna

In a country where we worship Goddess Durga and Kali for their eminent strength and valor, to witness any crime against women is distressing. It is important to note that such incidents are frequently reported in metropolitan cities, such as Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. There are a number of crimes, such as eve-teasing, honor killing, trafficking and rape that are reported every second minute in the country. Public, as well as police, plays a very important role in curbing the crime.

It is to be understood that any kind of violence is of public concern. The first step in this direction is to educate and understand that the crime doesn't need to be suppressed and must be prevented. Awareness related to laws, helpline numbers and several women protection cells is a prerequisite.
The police definitely play a crucial role in punishing the guilty. The role of police at this juncture should be to extend self-defense training to girls, conduct programmes of gender sensitisation and spread fear of punishment among the perpetrators.

A pragmatic approach to curbing the problem can be derived through a collective cooperation from both, the public and the police.
