Question

A capacitor is being charged by a source of emf. Justify the continuity of current in the circuit.

Justify

Solution

When the charging of a capacitor by an electromotive force (emf) source occurs, both conduction and displacement currents are individually discontinuous; nevertheless, collectively, these currents exhibit continuity through any closed electric circuit as described by the modified Ampere's equation.

ie., `phi B. DI = mu_0[I_c + I_d] = mu_0[I_c + epsilon_0 (dphi_E)/(dt)]`

where Ic = Conduction current

and Id = Displacement current.
