Question

A compound forms hcp structure. What is the number of (a) octahedral voids, (b) tetrahedral voids, (c) total voids formed in 0.2 mol of the compound?

Numerical

Solution

Number of atoms in 0.2 mol of the compound = 0.2 × NA = 0.2 × 6.022 × 1023
= 1.2044 × 1023 atoms

  1. Number of octahedral voids
    = Number of atoms
    = 1.2044 × 1023
  2. Number of tetrahedral voids
    = 2 × Number of atoms
    = 2 × 1.2044 × 1023
    = 2.4088 × 1023
  3. Total number of voids
    = 1.2044 × 1023 + 2.4088 × 1023
    = 3.6132 × 1023
