Question
A man spends 87% of his salary. If he saves Rs. 325; find his salary.
Solution 1
Let salary = Rs. x
∴ Expenditure = `(87)/(100)` of x
= Rs. `(87x)/(100)`
Saving = Rs. 325
∴ `x - (87x)/(100)`
= 325
⇒ `(100x - 87x)/(100)`
= 325
⇒ `(13x)/(100)`
= 325
⇒ x = `(325 xx 100)/(13)`
⇒ x = `(32500)/(13)`
⇒ x = 2500
∴ Salary = Rs. 2500
Solution 2
Use the savings percentage to express his salary
Let the salary be x. His savings, which are 13% of his salary, can be expressed as:
Savings = `13/100xx x = 325`
Solve for x (the salary)
Rearrange the equation:
`x = (325xx100)/13`
`x = 32500/13 = 2500`
Verify the result
If the salary is Rs. 2500, 13% savings would be:
`13/100xx2500 = 325`
The man's salary is: Rs. 2500
