Question
A retailer buys a washing machine marked at Rs.4800 and gets two successive discounts of 15% and 5%. He spends Rs.124 on transportation and sells it at a gain of 13%. Find the selling price of the machine.
Solution
M.P. of the machine = Rs.4800
Successive discounts,
D1 = 15%
D2 = 5%
S.P. = `(1 - "D"_1/100)(1 - "D"_2/100)"M.P."`
= `(1 - 15/100)(1 - 5/100)4800`
= `(85)/(100) xx (95)/(100) xx 4800`
= Rs.3876
Transportation = Rs.124
∴ C.P. for the retailer
= Rs.3876 + Rs.124
= Rs.4000
Gain
= 13% of Rs.4000
= Rs.520
∴ S.P.
= C.P. + Gain
= Rs.4000 + Rs.520
= Rs.4520
∴ The selling price of the machine = Rs.4520.
