Question
According to Oparin, which one of the following gases was not present in the primitive atmosphere of the earth?
Options
Methane
Oxygen
Hydrogen
Water vapour
MCQ
Solution
Oxygen
Explanation:
In 1923, A.I. Oparin proposed the first scientific theory for the beginning of life. J.B.S. Haldane (1928) made a similar remark on life's beginnings. According to them, the primaeval atmosphere was diminishing because hydrogen atoms (which are the most numerous and reactive) interacted with all available oxygen atoms to form water, leaving no free oxygen. As a result, oxygen was not present in the earth's early atmosphere.
