After 16 years, Fatima will be three times as old as she is now. Find her present age.
Solution
Let the present age of Fatima be x years.
After 16 years:
Fatima's age = (x + 16) years
According to the question:
x + 16 = 3(x)
or, 16 = 3x − x [Transposing x to the R.H.S.]
or, 16 = 2x
or, `(2x)/2=16/2` [Dividing both the sides by 2]
or, x = 8
∴ Present age of Fatima = 8 years
