Question
An article is marked at Rs 4,500 and the rate of sales tax on it is 6%. A trader buys this article at some discount and sells it to a customer at the marked price. If the trader pays Rs 81 as VAT; find:
How much per cent discount does the trader get?
The total money paid by the trader, including tax, to buy the article.
Solution
Selling price for the trader = Rs 4500
Sales tax charged by trader = 6% of 4500
`= 6/100 xx 4500`
VAT paid by trader = Rs 81
∴ VAT paid by trader = Tax charged - Tax paid
=81 = 270 - Tax paid
`=> Tax paid = 270 - 81 = 189`
Let purchase price for trader = Rs x
∴ 6% of x = 189
`=> 6/100 xx x = 189`
`=> x= 3150`
Discount in price = Rs 4500 - Rs 3150 = Rs 1350
`"Discount%" = "Discount"/"Marked price" xx 100`
`= (1350)/(4500) xx 100`
= Rs 30
The trader get 30% article
Money paid by the trader = Rs 3150 + Rs 189 = Rs 3339
