Question

An iron nail sinks in water but it floats in mercury. Why ?

Short Note

Solution

An iron nail sinks in water because the density of iron (7,900 kg/m3) is more than the density of water (1,000 kg/m3). Whereas the density of mercury (13,600 kg/m3) is more than the density of iron, so the iron nail floats in mercury.
