A brilliant and competent man, Dr. Sadao struggles to balance his humanistic principles with his patriotism. Even though their affections are mostly unsaid, the couple seems to truly and lovingly love one another. Sadao wants to ease his wife's extreme worry at housing the prisoner, which influences many of his choices about how to handle Tom. He liked his wife very much and didn't want to disturb her.
