Because the Maharaja could not permit the British officer to kill the tiger, he offered the officer's wife a bribe consisting of fifty diamond rings as compensation for the fact that she would have to watch her husband hunt tigers. The Maharaja was able to save his throne from being taken from him by taking this course of action.
