Question
Arrange the fractions `6/7, 7/8, 4/5` and `3/4` in descending order.
Solution
We have given, `6/7, 7/8, 4/5` and `3/4`.
The L.C.M. of 7, 8, 5 and 4 is `2 xx 2 xx 2 xx 5 xx 7` = 280
2 |
7, 8, 5, 4 |
2 |
7, 4, 5, 2 |
2 |
7, 2, 5, 1 |
5 |
7, 1, 5, 1 |
7 |
7, 1, 1, 1 |
1, 1, 1, 1 |
Now, `6/7 = (6 xx 40)/(7 xx 40) = 240/280`,
`7/8 = (7 xx 35)/(8 xx 35) = 245/280`,
`4/5 = (4 xx 56)/(5 xx 56) = 224/280` and `3/4 = (3 xx 70)/(4 xx 70) = 210/280`
On comparing the above, we get;
`245/280 > 240/280 > 224/280 > 210/280`
i.e. `7/8 > 6/7 > 4/5 > 3/4`
