Question
At 0.3 V and 0.7 V, the diodes Ge and Si become conductors respectively. In the given figure, if the ends of diode Ge are overturned, the change in potential V0 will be ______.
Options
0.2 V
0.6 V
0.4 V
0.8 V
Solution
At 0.3 V and 0.7 V, the diodes Ge and Si become conductors respectively. In the given figure, if the ends of diode Ge are overturned, the change in potential V0 will be 0.4 V.
Explanation:
Since both Ge and Si are initially forward-biased, the Ge diode may successfully conduct current with a 0.3 V voltage drop.
∴ Initial output voltage, V0 = 12 - 0.3 = 11.7 V
Only the Si diode will function when the ends of the Ge diode are reversed, or when it is in reverse bias. When this is the case, the output voltage,
V0 = 12 - 0.7 = 11.3 V
∴ Change in output voltage = 11.7 - 11.3 = 0.4 V
