Question

At 15C the height of Eifel tower is 324 m. If it is made of iron, what will be the increase in length in cm, at 30C?

Numerical

Solution

Height of Eifel tower = 324 m = 32400 cm at 15C

Temperature coefficient of linear expansion of iron = 11.5 × 10-6°C-1

Change in temperature = 30C − 15 C = 15C

Change in length = Δl

Using formula for linear expansion of solids, we have

`(triangle l)/l = α_l triangle "T"`

`=> (triangle l)/32400 = 11.5 xx 10^(-6) xx 15`

`triangle l = 32400 xx 11.5 xx 10^(-6) xx 15`

= 5.6 cm
