Question

At a certain temperature and total pressure of 10Pa, iodine vapour contains 40% by volume of I atoms

\[\ce{I2(g) <=> 2I(g)}\]

Calculate Kpfor the equilibrium.

Numerical

Solution

Partial pressure of I atoms,

`"p"_1 = 40/100 xx "p"_"total"`

`= 40/100 xx 10^5`

Partial pressure of I2 molecules,

`"P"_("I"_2) = 60/100 xx "p"_"total"`

`= 60/100 xx 10^5`

`= 6 xx 10^4 " Pa"`

Now, for the given reaction,

`"K"_"p" = ("pI")^2/"p"_("I"_2)`

`= ((4xx10^4)^2 "Pa"^2)/((6xx10^4) "Pa")`

`= 2.67 xx 10^4` pa
