Nirguna Bhakti attributes worship to an attributeless, abstract form of God. Nirguna Bhakti was promoted by Baba Guru Nanak. He vehemently condemned both Muslim and Hindu ceremonial baths, image worship, sacrifices, and scriptural rituals. Baba Guru Nanak believed that the divine had neither gender or form and that remembering and reciting the heavenly name in Punjabi hymns known as "shabad" would foster a sense of oneness.
