Question
Both lysosomes and vacuoles are endomembrane structures, yet they differ in terms of their functions. Comment.
Solution
Lysosomes and vacuoles are two examples of endomembrane system organelles that work closely together yet are specialised to carry out distinct tasks. Because lysosomes contain hydrolytic digestive enzymes, they aid in food digestion by breaking down ageing and dead cells. They also participate in the division of cells. Conversely, vacuoles give prokaryotes buoyancy and mechanical strength (air vacuoles) or aid in excretion and osmoregulation in amoeba (contractile vacuoles).
