Question
Briefly describe the structure of the cerebrum in human brain.
Long Answer
Solution
Structure of the cerebrum in human brain:
The brain consists of the main three parts and lies in the cranial cavity of the skull.
- The cerebrum
- The cerebellum
- The medulla oblongata
Cerebrum in human brain:
- The cerebrum is the largest portion of the brain. It is divided into two (right and left) halves called the cerebral hemisphere.
- Each hemisphere is further divided into four lobes: frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital.
- The surface of the cerebrum, called the cerebral cortex, is highly folded, with ridges (gyri) and grooves (sulci) that increase its surface area for processing complex information.
- The cerebral cortex is composed of grey matter, which contains neuron cell bodies, while the inner layer consists of white matter, made up of nerve fibers that transmit signals.
- The wavery edges of the folded layer has large number of neurons to the extent of nine billion.
- Cerebellum is much smaller and is located under the cerebrum. Its main function is to balance the body and coordinate muscular activities.
- The cerebrum decides the action, whereas the cerebellum implements the action.
- For example, if you get an idea to stand up and walk, it arises in the cerebrum, but the muscles involved in this process contract or relax under the control of the cerebellum.
