In India, the concept of consumer protection is not new. However, organised and systematic movement to safeguard the interests of consumers is a recent phenomenon. This developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s with the growing liberalisation of the economy. The government legislated a law in the year 1986 known as the Consumer Protection Act, 1986.
