Question

Calculate the following:

A gas ‘X’ at -33°C is heated to 127°C at constant pressure. Calculate the percentage increase in the volume of the gas.

Sum

Solution

Let V1 = x cc

V2 = ?

T1 = - 33 + 273 = 240 K

T2 = 127 + 273 = 400 K

At constant pressure `"V"_1/"T"_1 = "V"_2/"T"_2`

`therefore "V"_2 = ("V"_1"T"_2)/"T"_1 = ("x" xx 400)/240 = "5x"/3` cc

Increase in volume = `"5x"/3 - "x" = 2/3 "x"`cc

∴ % increase = `"2x"/"3x" xx 100 = 200/3 = 66 2/3%`
