Question
Copy and complete the following equations:
- AlN + H2O →
- 2NH3 + 3PbO →
- NH3 +3Cl2 →
- NH3 + CO2 →
- Which property of ammonia is illustrated by equation (c)?
- What important fertiliser is prepared from equation (d)? State the conditions.
Solution
- AlN + 3H2O → Al(OH)3 +NH3↑
- 2NH3 + 3PbO → 3Pb + 3H2O + N2
- When ammonia is in excess,
2NH3 + 3Cl2 → N2 + 6HC1
6NH3 + 6HCl → 6NH4Cl
8NH3 +3Cl2 → N2 + 6NH4Cl
When chlorine is in excess,
NH3 + 3Cl2 → 3HCl + NCl3 - 2NH3 + CO2 → NH2CONH2 + H2O
- Ammonia acts as a reducing agent, as explained by equation (c).
- Urea, the nitrogenous fertiliser, is prepared from equation (d).
Conditions for urea preparation: High pressure (140-200 atm) and high temperature (170-190°C).
