Define
a) Phase b) Component c) Degree of freedom
Solution
a) The homogeneous ,physically distinct and mechanically separable portion of a system ,which is separated from other such parts of the system by definite boundary surfaces is called as Phase[P] .
b) The smallest number of independently variable constituents taking part in the state of equillibrum by means of which the composition of each phase can be expressed directly or in the form of chemical equation are called as Components of a system [C] .
c) Degree of freedom or Variance (F) is the minimum number of independently variable factors such as temperature , pressure and components of a system which have to be arbitrarily specified in order to represent perfectly the conditions of equilibrium .
