Question
Define the following term:
Pedigree chart
Solution
A pedigree is a standardised chart that is used to present a family tree. It is also a convenient method for a physician or genetic counsellor to quickly record the family history information of an individual. The standard symbols for female (circle), male (square), matings (horizontal line between individuals), offspring of mating (vertical line down from mating line, with horizontal line to indicate siblings), twins and so forth are used. The symbols for individuals who exhibit the trait (or have been diagnosed with the condition) in question are shaded. A pedigree chart enables the tracking of traits across multiple generations as well as the derivation of modes of inheritance and likelihood of transmission, even when the data is limited and incomplete, as it typically is in actual families.
