Question

Describe any two types of granulocytes (WBC) w.r.t. their structure and function.

Answer in Brief

Solution

  1. WBCs with granular cytoplasm and lobulated nuclei are known as granulocytes.
  2. Granulocytes are of three types:
    1. Neutrophils
    2. Basophils
    3. Eosinophils depending upon staining property of the granules

a. Neutrophils:

  1. Granules are very minute and numerous, dyed with a neutral pigment.
  2. 55 to 70% of total WBCs.
  3. Nucleus is 2 to 5 Lobed.
  4. Diameter is between 9 to 15 micrometer
  5. Able to perform amoeboid movements.
  6. Show Phagocytic action - destroy pathogen by phagocytosis.

c. Eosinophils - (Acidophils):

  1. The granules get stained with acidic stains.
  2. 1-3% ofall WBCs
  3. Nucleus is bilobed.
  4. The granules contain enzymes and proteins.
  5. Eosinophils are involved in phagocytosis, cell killing and detoxification.
