Question
Describe any two types of granulocytes (WBC) w.r.t. their structure and function.
Answer in Brief
Solution
- WBCs with granular cytoplasm and lobulated nuclei are known as granulocytes.
- Granulocytes are of three types:
- Neutrophils
- Basophils
- Eosinophils depending upon staining property of the granules
a. Neutrophils:
- Granules are very minute and numerous, dyed with a neutral pigment.
- 55 to 70% of total WBCs.
- Nucleus is 2 to 5 Lobed.
- Diameter is between 9 to 15 micrometer
- Able to perform amoeboid movements.
- Show Phagocytic action - destroy pathogen by phagocytosis.
c. Eosinophils - (Acidophils):
- The granules get stained with acidic stains.
- 1-3% ofall WBCs
- Nucleus is bilobed.
- The granules contain enzymes and proteins.
- Eosinophils are involved in phagocytosis, cell killing and detoxification.
