Describe the functions of various parts of a plant.

Various parts of the plant are as follows:

  1. Functions of the Roots:
    1. Anchoring and supporting the plant.
    2. Absorption of water and minerals.
    3. Some roots show some modifications for performing additional functions.
    4. E.g., Aerial roots absorb moisture from the air, stilt-roots-give additional support runners help in vegetative propagation, breathing roots (pneumatophores) breathe for plants, some underground roots store food materials, etc.
  2. Functions of the Stems:
    1. To hold all the branches of the plant.
    2. To perform the function of photosynthesis as in cactus.
    3. To transport water absorbed by the roots to all the parts of the plant and to transport food prepared by the leaves to various plant parts.
    4. Modified stems perform functions such as food storage, reproduction, support, etc.
  3. Functions of the Leave:
    1. Production of food by performing photosynthesis.
    2. Transpiration, i.e. giving out excess water.
    3. Modified leaves perform additional functions such as reproduction, food storage, support, etc.
  4. Functions of Flowers: Reproduction
  5. Functions of Fruits: Protection of seeds and storage of food materials.
  6. Functions of Seed: A new plant develops from it.
