Question

Describe the principles of a nuclear reactor.

Short Note

Solution

A nuclear reactor is an apparatus or a device in which nuclear fission is carried out in a controlled manner to produce energy in the form heat which is then converted to electricity. In a uranium reactor, \[\ce{^235_92U}\] is used as the fuel. It is bombarded by slow neutrons to produce \[\ce{^236_92U}\] which undergoes fission.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:

Nuclear energy is the energy in the nucleus, or core, of an atom. Atoms are tiny units that make up all matter in the universe, and energy is what holds the nucleus together. There is a huge amount of energy in an atom's dense nucleus.
