Question
Differentiate between analogy and homology giving one example each of plant and animal respectively.
Solution
a) Homologous organs are the organs that have same origin but different functions, while analogous organs are the organs that have the same function but different origins.
Homologous Organs
Thorns and tendrils of plants: Both are modifications of stem but they perform different functions. One is for protection, while the other is helpful for climbing.
Forearms of man and cheetah: Both have similar origins but the function of forearms in both the animals is different.
Analogous Organs
Wings of insect and birds: Both types of wings are used for flying but their structures are very different.
Tuberous root and stem: Even though sweet potato and potato are both modifications for food storage, sweet potato is a root modification, while potato is a stem modification.
