Question
Discuss any four significant features of Apartheid in South Africa.
Solution
- White people controlled the political and economic life of the Union of South Africa. Negroes and African Americans faced discrimination and were not granted the right to vote. They couldn't hold skilled occupations or organise a strike and had to live in a specified region. The government regulated their mobility through a network of pass laws.
- Since white people opposed equality between races, Dr. Malan created apartheid. White people believed they belonged to the superior race, whereas non-white people were inferior and primitive.
- Complete social and political division is what apartheid represents. There were separate hospitals, beaches, churches, cafes, restrooms, parks, railroads, buses, coaches, and benches. Black students received a far worse education and had to attend different schools.
- Blacks were not given representation in the Parliament, were required to carry identification at all times so that their movements could be monitored, and marriages between whites and non-whites were banned.
- South African Nelson Mandela served a 27-year term in prison for his struggle against the Apartheid movement.
