Question

Examine the features of fortification of the Vijayanagar empire.

Long Answer

Solution

The features of fortification of the Vijayanagar Empire are as follows:

  1. The enormous fortress walls surrounded every city division that Vijayanagara ruled over. Seven lines of forts were arranged.
  2. They encircled the Vijayanagara city as well as the nearby farmland and forest. The tallest wall connected the city's surrounding hills.
  3. This wall was built from wedge-shaped stones. No mortar or other cementing materials were used during construction, but they still adhered to one another well. The walls were constructed with soil that was littered with debris.
  4. Agricultural areas, gardens, cultivated fields, and wooded areas were all part of this fortification.
  5. Modern archaeologists have found traces of an agricultural tract between the religious and city centres.
  6. However, a second line of defences encircled the centre of the metropolitan complex. A third line of defence encircled the royal centre. The gates leading into the fort were heavily guarded. These gates gave access to the major thoroughfares. Their architectural features distinguished them. The gate had an arch on it and was covered by a dome.
