The natural vegetation has adapted very well to this cold climate. The evergreen softwood trees of the region are conical in shape and have needle-like leaves. They are called coniferous trees as they have cones in which they bear their seeds. The common tree species are pine, fir, spruce, larch, and cedar. The forests are also called taiga.
