Question
Explain reactivity of halogens towards oxygen.
Short Note
Solution
Reactivity of halogens towards O2:
- Halogens with oxygen form many oxides with different oxidation states of halogens.
- Fluorine forms O2 F2 and OF2.
- Chlorine forms oxides like\[\ce{\overset{1+}{C}l2O, \overset{3+}{C}l2O3, \overset{5+}{C}l2O5, \overset{6+}{C}lO3 \overset{7+}{C}l2O7}\]. All oxides are oxidizing agents.
- Bromine forms oxides like Br2O, BrO2, BrO3 and iodine forms l2O4, l2O5, l2O7.
