Question
Explain relation between greenhouse effect and global warming.
Solution
Greenhouse gases, such as CO2 and methane, collect heat from the Sun and Earth and return it to the Earth's surface. Thus, these gases block some of the heat rays from escaping into the atmosphere. This cycle is repeated multiple times to keep the Earth's temperature at an optimal level of 15°C. As a result, greenhouse gases contribute to the maintenance of Earth's temperature at normal levels.
However, as industrialisation has developed, the concentration of these gases has risen, causing the Earth's surface to heat up. As a result, the average temperature of the Earth has risen, causing climatic shifts. Over the last century, the Earth's temperature has risen by 0.6°C. This has contributed to global warming.
The greenhouse effect can be mitigated by limiting the usage of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels emit greenhouse gases when burned.
