Question
Explain the changes that the different parts of the embryo undergo after implantation up till placenta formation.
Explain
Solution
After implantation, the following changes occur, leading to placenta formation:
-
Trophoblast Development: In order to make touch with the mother's blood arteries, the trophoblast, the embryo's outer layer, develops and infiltrates the uterine lining.
-
Chorionic Villi Formation: Chorionic villi are developed by the trophoblast and pierce the uterine tissue. These villi expand the surface area available for gas and nutrient exchange.
-
Placenta Formation: The placenta, which is made up of uterine tissue and chorionic villi, helps the mother and embryo exchange waste products, nutrients, and oxygen.
