Question
Explain the classification of solids on the basis of electrical conductivity.
Short Note
Solution
According to their electrical conductivity, solids are divided into three groups:
Conductors: Conductors are defined as solids with electrical conductivities between 104 and 107 ohm−1 m−1. For example, ionic solids (electrolytes) and metals.
Insulators: insulators are defined as solids with low electrical conductivities, between 10−20 and 10−10 ohm−1 m−1. For example, molecular solids and nonmetals.
Semiconductors: Semiconductors are defined as solids with electrical conductivities between 10−6 and 104 ohm−1 m−1. such as metalloids such as Si, Ge, etc.
