India - Non-Alignment

1. Founding Member of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM):
   • In order to maintain its neutrality during the Cold War between the US and the USSR, India adopted the policy of non-alignment after attaining independence in 1947.
   • Along with leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Josip Broz Tito (Yugoslavia), Gamal Abdel Nasser (Egypt), Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana), and Sukarno (Indonesia), India was instrumental in the creation of NAM in 1961.
2. Independent Foreign Policy:
   • Without joining any military alliances such as the Warsaw Pact (headed by the USSR) or NATO (led by the USA), India was able to maintain its sovereignty in international matters by being non-aligned. 
   • It made it possible for India to collaborate on technological and economic advancement with both blocs. 
3. Promotion of Peace & Development:
   • India's non-aligned position prioritized economic development, disarmament, and peaceful coexistence.
   • It aided India's rise to fame as a developing country leader and supporter of the New International Economic Order (NIEO).
