  3. Puberty begins when the pituitary glands begin to stimulate the production of the male sex hormone, testosterone, in boys and the female sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone, in girls.
  4. The primary sex characteristics include the enlargement of testicles and penis in boys and the development of ovaries, uterus, and vagina in girls.
  5. Secondary sex characteristics include an enlarged Adam's apple, deeper voice, pubic and underarm hair in boys, and enlargement of breasts and hips, and appearance of pubic and underarm hair in girls.
  6. Early-maturing girls are more likely to have emotional problems, lower self-image, and higher rates of depression, anxiety, and disordered eating as compared to their peers.
