Question
Explain the following concept.
DSM
Short Note
Solution
There are two major classification systems for psychological disorders:
- Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM)
- International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD).
The American Psychiatric Association publishes the DSM, a classification of officially recognised psychiatric disorders (APA). It is primarily used to ensure consistency of diagnosis among mental health professionals. DSM-I was first published in 1952 and has been revised on a regular basis since then. The current version of DSM-5 was released in 2013. It includes 22 broad categories of mental disorders with numerous subcategories, such as anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive and personality disorders, and so on.
