Question
Explain the following concept.
National Interest.
Solution
The term "national interest" refers to the ways by which our country's independence and sovereignty can be safeguarded. National interest also involves efforts to achieve economic development and to take steps to increase our national power. We say we are fostering our national interest when judgments are made after thorough consideration of what is advantageous and good for our country. In this perspective, the following variables are included in every country's national interest.
- Defence, i.e. the protection of our country’s independence, sovereignty and integrity is the highest national interest.
- Economic development is also an important national interest. An economically weak nation will not be able to maintain its independence. Hence, economic development is understood to be an important national interest, next only to defence.
