Caste
Solution
The etymology of the term caste is found in the Portuguese word ‘casta’. The British used the term caste to define various ethnic groups. Sociologists define caste through two axes i.e., varna and jati. Caste is a major source of diversity in Indian society.
Example:
- Scheduled caste, Scheduled tribes etc.
- Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra (Varna/division of Hindu into 4-fold hierarchy).
