Question

Explain the following:

Zinc can produce hydrogen on reacting with acids but copper cannot.

Explain

Solution

In the series of chemical activities, zinc is more readily transformed to Zn2+ than copper is to Cu2+. In the activity series, Zn is also above hydrogen, while Cu is below hydrogen. Copper cannot remove hydrogen from acid, but zinc can.
