Question

Explain the life cycle of bombyx mori.

Answer in Brief

Solution

The silkworm is holometabolous insect; about 50 days, they complete their life cycle of four different metamorphosing phases; egg, larva, pupa, and adult (moth). The larva are naked, have a short anal horn and feed principally on the leaves of mulberry. They become fully grown and spin their cocoon in about six weeks.

The process of silk production is known as sericulture. Extracting raw silk starts by cultivating the silkworms on mulberry leaves. Once the worms start pupating in their cocoons, these are dissolved in boiling water in order for individual long fibres to be extracted and fed into the spinning reel.
