In picture 'a', water is visible in a hole in the ground. This water is in liquid form. In picture 'b' this same water is forming ice. The temperature of the water has decreased due to the colder air. When ice starts forming, the temperature is falling below 4° C. The density of water at a temperature below 4° C decreases, and its volume increases. At this temperature, water expands. This expanding water is shown in picture 'b' with the help of an arrow. This hole appears to be widened due to the inconsistent behavior of water.
