Question
Find the angle between hour-hand and minute-hand in a clock at 2 : 20
Solution
The angle between any two consecutive numbers of a clock is `(360°)/12` = 30°.
If the minute-hand is at 4 and hour-hand is at 2, angle between them is (2 x 30°) = 60°.
But at 20 past two, i.e., at 2 : 20, the hour-hand has moved 20 minutes towards 3.
In 60 minutes, the hour-hand covers 30°, therefore in 20 minutes, it covers `((20 xx 30)/60)^circ` = 10°
∴ the angle between the two hands of the clock at twenty past two = 60° – 10° = 50°.
