Form pairs. Each person in the pair writes down a simple story, news item, report, etc. Then one of the partners tries to tell it to the other person. The other person shows through gestures that he is not interested - by yawning, looking away, frowning, doing something else, etc. 

Repeat the activity after changing the roles of the listener and the speaker. Then prepare two tables.

Instructions:

  1. Form pairs. Each person in the pair writes down a simple story, news item, report, or any short passage.
  2. One partner reads their passage aloud while the other partner listens.
  3. The listener should initially show signs of disinterest using body language, such as:
    • Yawning
    • Looking away
    • Frowning
    • Doing something else (like fidgeting)
  4. Repeat the activity, but this time, the listener should actively engage by:
    • Maintaining eye contact
    • Nodding occasionally
    • Asking relevant questions
    • Smiling and reacting appropriately
  5. Task:
    After completing both rounds, work together to prepare two tables

How to Be a Good Listener

Do's Examples
Maintain eye contact Look at the speaker attentively.
Nod occasionally Show understanding and agreement.
Respond appropriately Say things like "I see," "That’s interesting," or ask relevant questions.
Show facial expressions Smile, raise eyebrows in interest, or show concern when needed.
Stay focused Avoid distractions like checking your phone or looking away.
Encourage the speaker Say "Go on," "Tell me more," or "I’m listening."
Ask questions Show curiosity by asking relevant questions.
Be patient Let the speaker finish without interrupting.

How NOT to Be a Good Listener

Don’ts Examples
Look away or avoid eye contact Staring at your phone or looking at the ceiling.
Yawn or act bored Showing signs of disinterest like sighing or fidgeting.
Interrupt the speaker Cutting them off before they finish.
Show negative facial expressions Frowning, rolling eyes, or looking annoyed.
Do something else while listening Playing with objects, texting, or talking to someone else.
Respond with disinterest Saying "Whatever," "So what?" or not responding at all.
Change the topic suddenly Ignoring what the speaker said and talking about something unrelated.
