Question

Give a brief description of the process of synthesis of food in green plants.

Answer in Brief

Solution

Photosynthesis is defined as the process in which chlorophyll-containing plant cells synthesize food in the form of carbohydrates using carbon dioxide and water in the presence of solar energy.

                     Photosynthesis

Sources of raw materials required for photosynthesis:

  1. Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants synthesize food, and it occurs mostly in their leaves.
  2. The leaves contain a green pigment known as chlorophyll. It aids plants in absorbing the energy of sunlight.
  3. This energy is needed to produce food from carbon dioxide and water. Chlorophyll, sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water all contribute to the photosynthetic process.
  4. The leaves absorb solar energy, which is stored in the plant as chemical energy.

Thus, photosynthesis can be represented by the following equation.

\[\ce{\underset{(Carbon dioxide)}{6CO2} + \underset{(Water)}{6H2O} ->[Sunlight][Chlorophyll] \underset{(Carbohydrates)}{C6H12O6} + \underset{(Oxygen)}{6O2}}\]
